How often do you set out on a journey, whether it's by car, bike or train, without knowing where you want to end up?

I'm guessing your answer is very rarely or never, because that'd be crazy right. Who sets out on a journey without knowing the final destination.

Your Biggest Journey

Well I hate to break this to you but the vast majority of people are happy to partake in the biggest journey they'll ever make without a clue where they intend to end up.

Every day you're progressing your life, making decisions, moving forward and changing direction. Your life is the biggest journey you'll ever take on.

Every decision, buying cars, moving home, changing jobs, starting a business is like taking a turn at a junction. Every decision affects where your life is going.

But where are you going? Do you really know, and if not how on earth will you ever know if/when you arrive? How can you measure your success? The truth is you can't do any of those without knowing your intended destination.

Ask most people what they want in life and you can immediately identify the 95% who have never really given it much thought, because you'll hear the default answers. Usually the most popular are happiness and money.

This is fine except it's not specific enough to be any use to you. You haven't quantified it.

Your Own Definite Major Purpose

The questions you should be asking yourself are what makes you happy? How much money do you need? When do you need it? What will you do with it? What about freedom? What about fulfillment?

You need to sit down and give these questions some serious thought, then write down the answers in your Definite Major Purpose (DMP).

When you have what you really want your life to look like in writing you'll find that your new sense of direction changes everything.

Life Changing Decisions Become Easy

Referring often to your DMP helps you keep your life on track and helps you make and adjust your plans to ensure you get there.

One important use for your DMP which I have experienced myself is when it comes to making big difficult decisions. About a year ago I spent about 6 months trying to make a decision which I knew would have a significant impact on my life.

I didn't have a DMP at the time but since creating one the decision made itself.

For every significant decision you make (large or small) refer to your DMP and if a choice takes you closer to your DMP then do it. If it doesn't take you closer then don't do it. Simple. All those difficult decisions suddenly become a lot easier to make.

Ok so I think I've made the points I wanted to make. What I'm going to do next will achieve a number of things. Firstly, it'll prove I'm serious and practice what I preach. Secondly, it'll give you a real example. Thirdly, it'll reveal a little more about myself.

A Real Life DMP Example

You guessed it, it's my very own Definite Major Purpose:

o To have highly automated passive income replace my current income
o To have enough spare money to invest in shares, land and property
o To pursue a passion, be it my business or otherwise
o To have the freedom to travel more often and for longer
o To be able to run my businesses from anywhere in the world
o To become a thought leader in my chosen niches
o To be able to help friends and family benefit from the business too
o To spend more time doing the things I enjoy (golf, walking, gym)
o To pursue new hobbies which I currently don’t have the time for
o To be able to study again and learn something completely new
o To value life more rather than just existing
o To spend more time with friends, family and pets

o To have people think I’m a little crazy for what I do then to prove them wrong

Now It's Your Turn

At this point I usually just say "I hope this was useful... feel free to email me... etc..." and that still applies. However, this time I'm asking you to take action now.

Spend a little time thinking about what your DMP will look like and write it down. It's not difficult and you don't have to get it right first time, just make sure you do it and refer back to it often.
